Select wind range to see settings:

Upwind

Light Air
Vang
Less than block-to-block
Slightly eased — keep the leech soft to depower in gusts. Load up as wind builds.
Cunningham
Eased
Keep draft forward. No tension — let the sail breathe and find power.
Outhaul
8" / 20 cm
Draft deep for maximum drive. Measure from boom to foot at mid-boom.
Main Sheet
Less than block-to-block
Ease enough to keep the top batten parallel to the boom — don't stall the leech.

Downwind

Light Air
Vang
Adjust so leech fans
Ease until the leech opens and fans out. Too much vang kills projected area.
Cunningham
Eased
Fully eased downwind — always. Let the draft move back for more projected area.
Outhaul
10" / 25 cm
Maximum sag for power running. Deepest setting you'll use all race.
Main Sheet
Boom 90–110°
Let the boom out past 90° in light air to maximize projected sail area.

Reaching

Light Air
Vang
Slight bend in mast
Just enough vang to maintain a slight mast bend — keep the top section from flopping.
Cunningham
Eased
Eased — keep power in the sail. Only pull on if the boat feels overpowered.
Outhaul
6" / 15 cm
Between upwind and downwind depth. Slightly eased for reaching power.
Main Sheet
Leeward telltales flying
Trim until leeward telltales just break. Keep them flowing for maximum VMG.

Key Principles to Remember

01

Cunningham is Always Eased Downwind

No exceptions. If you're sailing downwind with cunningham on, you're leaving speed on the table. Ease it the moment you bear away — it's one of the biggest gains on the run.

02

Outhaul Depth = Wind Inverse

More wind, less depth — less wind, more depth. The outhaul is your power dial. In heavy air your flat 4" upwind setting will feel wrong but it keeps the boat upright and fast.

03

Vang Controls Leech Tension Off the Wind

Upwind the mainsheet controls leech tension. The moment you ease the sheet on a reach or run, vang takes over. Set it before you bear away and adjust by watching the top batten twist.

04

Death Roll Prevention in Heavy Air

Running in 20+ knots? Keep the boom inside 90°, carry 30° of twist in the vang, and ease the outhaul slightly from your lightest downwind setting. Stability beats raw VMG when you're capsizing every leg.

Gear That Makes These Settings Work
