Rig the Harken ILCA / Laser Vang for Racing

Clean routing, compact terminations, and reliable race settings — in minutes.

Step 1 — Luggage Tag the Single Block

Luggage tag the single block to the Harken Vang Base.

Step 2 — Thread the Line Through

Thread the double block line through the single block

Step 3 — Two for One Luggage Tag

Use the loop end attached to the double block, and pull both blocks through the loop to luggage tag all the t18 blocks to the vang base.

Step 4 — Attach the Vang Tang Block

Attach the Vang Tang block, the tang key must be removed for this, then re-install the tang key into the vang tang block (the one that attaches to the boom) Note - you can use an upgraded Harken Fly Block but the regular Harken vang tang block will work just fine.

Step 5 — Thread the primary purchase

Thread the primary purchase which is the built in double block and the harken t18-double, the sequence should be top-top, bottom-bottom

Step 6 — Thread the Cleated Line Through The Base

The Last part of the cascade from the double blocks which should end at the harken t18-double, should now run to the vang base and around the internal built-in single block in the Harken Vang Base, then out through the vang cleat. You may need splicing tool or wire to thread this part - this is the hardest one to thread.

Step 7 — Thread the Vang Handle

Thread the cleated line through the vang handle, pull out the slack in the vang purchases and mark where the max-off position is for the vang, this is where we want to tie a bowline for our vang handle, this way you can get more vang on when you need it because there's less slop in the line if the handle starts at max ease

Step 8 — Trim the Tail

Trim the tail to your desired length, I recommend keeping around 2ft of tail on the vang, it makes it easier to grab the vang when you can't reach the handle, so in other words it helps you find and reach the handle on those days when the handle can be flopping around
